Non League Review: Doswell slates wastefulness after Sutton United lose at Weston-Super-Mare

Sutton United boss Paul Doswell bemoaned his side’s profligacy in front of goal as they lost 2-1 at home to Weston-Super-Mare, ending a five-game unbeaten streak.

The U’s took the lead through Dan Fitchett as the Vanarama Conference South player of the month cut in from the right wing and curled a left-footed strike beyond Luke Purnell.

However, the visitors responded quickly through Dayle Grubb and Joe McClennan to earn a half-time lead which they saw out to the end.

Doswell was left disappointed at the manner of the defeat, and reserved particular criticism for Ricky Wellard’s inaccuracy in front of goal.

He said: “We went 1-0 up but the most disappointing thing was to give away the first goal.

“Whether it’s a foul or not we’re not sure but the referee has given it and they’ve gone and scored a great free-kick.

“I saw Ricky Wellard got man of the match but I reckon eight or ten of his shots didn’t hit the target. Once he got himself into great positions to shoot he’s got to be hitting the target.

“We tried to stretch the game as much as we could but Weston sat 11 men in front of the ball. But they counter-attacked us twice in the whole game and scored twice.”

Kingstonian ran out 3-2 winners to claim just their fifth home victory in the Ryman Premier, with goals coming from Malachi Hudson and a Charlie Penny double.

Hampton & Richmond Borough lost 3-1 away at Leatherhead, making it four consecutive defeats, while the Met Police’s match against Margate was postponed following a pitch inspection.

In the Ryman South, Carshalton Athletic failed to keep up their recent good run of form as Sean O’Toole’s goal wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-1 loss at Chipstead.

Tooting & Mitcham sit firmly in mid-table as they eased their way to a 4-1 win at home to Walton Casuals as Corinthian Casuals saw their visit to Three Bridges abandoned.

In the Combined Counties League, Colliers Wood United were beaten at Hanworth Villa, giving the league’s second-bottom side just a fifth league victory this season.
