George North gets a bittersweet ending as Wales beat the Barbarians 33-31

George North announced his retirement from last month after a tough personal end to his career.

But when the Welsh rugby great had the opportunity to lace up his boots one last time to battle against his nation, he couldn’t say no.

Barbarian FC, an invitational team of rugby players from around the world, joined forces to play Wales in a men’s and women’s double header at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

North said: “It’s a massive honor and privilege to have this last game.

“I didn’t think I’d get one.”

North scored two trademark tries and one conversion in a 33-31 win for the men on what was one of the hottest days of the year so far.

There were jumps of sheer happiness from both players and fans as North ran over the try line for his first try.

Playing against your nation is rare, but scoring against them too is an odd feeling.

North said: “To sign off like that was special for me.

“It felt weird and very strange to score against Wales.”

The Baa-Baas serve as a reminder of the importance of playing with freedom, expression and spark, as players of different nations add their own flair to the game.

First established in 1890, the exclusive side who pull off many a trick move, have been a constant joy within the game of rugby.

Two-time world cup winner Faf de Klerk was lifted in a lineout, even though he’s a scrum-half.

Essentially, the black and white hoops are the Harlem Globe Trotters of rugby union.

Asked about North’s exploits on the day, De Klerk said: “We try and create a fun set up, but when it comes to the job you can see he just turns it on.

“He’s been great, that’s testament to why he’s played over 100 caps.”

Wales, meanwhile, are continuing to rebuild both their men’s and women’s side, with their youngsters putting on an impressive display.

The women’s side also left the Allianz Stadium victorious after winning 34-17.

Wales’ men open their Nations Championship campaign against Fiji on 4 July aiming to build momentum ahead of the Rugby World Cup in Australia next year.

Head coach Steve Tandy said: “It’s great [for North] to finish on a high.

“He’s been an amazing ambassador and rugby player for our country.

“He’s done so many amazing things in a Wales shirt.

“As a nation we pride ourselves in having some legendary players – and he’s definitely one of them.”

For now, North plans to go on holiday and take some well earned time away from the pitch with family.

However, will be keeping a close eye on Wales’ progress in the Nations Championship.

North said: “They are a special group and have a special opportunity.

“I’m jealous that I can’t be on that journey with them.

“I’ve loved every second in a Welsh jersey.”
