It isn’t strictly true that a direct link between sanctions and suicide was never established – at least two coroners ruled that suicides were a result of sanctions.

I am really quote shocked that any food bank would think it good practice to allow DWP job advisors into their bank. Among benefit claimants, who must surely make up a good proportion of their users, Jobcentre policies on sanctioning, compulsory ‘preparation for work’ training and workfare are experienced as coercive and often downright punitive. The idea of having been sanctioned by a job advisor, find yourself having to use a food bank to feed yourself and perhaps your family, and there to encounter more job advisors ‘encouraging’ you into job search – it just beggars belief. Are Trussell so naive?
