Buttery, golden brown parcels of gravy tenderness – the pie may be humble but it should never be ignored.

The good news is starting to spread – British Pie Week returns today will see in the greatest seven days in our nation’s culinary calendar.

New research has revealed a truth we could have all guessed, that 75% of people enjoy a pie at least once a month.

Those looking to up their pie intake will have no trouble finding some flour-filled fun.

Across south west London, bakers and chefs will be busy perfecting their puff, short crust and filo in preparation for the pastry extravaganza.

Crooked Billet in Wimbledon Common will be daily changing their Chef’s Pot Pie of the Day in honour of the event.

The Admiral Codrington in Chelsea will announce the winner of their #PitchYourPie contest via Twitter this weekend. The winning pie will sit victoriously alongside their Chef’s rotating selection all week.

Renaissance pubs, responsible for The Avalon in Clapham and The Latchmere in Battersea, will be celebrating the occasion in honour of the pint’s natural pie alliance.

They will be giving away a free pie with the sale of a locally brewed London beer. Yes, we did say free. This crusty giveaway starts at 5pm Monday 2 March, running to Friday 6 March.

Fillings are said to get creative. Ham shank and tarragon could make an appearance and rabbit and leek might make a starring role.

Stocks aren’t likely to last, so if you can’t bear to miss wild boar and smoked bacon, get there early.
