WATCH: New Covent Garden Market celebrates 50 years in Nine Elms

New Covent Garden Market celebrated 50 years of trading in Nine Elms with a series of personalised plaques dedicated to the generations of people who have worked its stalls.

Battersea MP Marsha De Cordova was on hand to help pull back the red curtain to unveil The Garden Wall inside the newly developed Buyer’s Walk.

The plaques purchased by traders, suppliers and friends of the market are a lasting nod to its sweeping history, all whilst raising over £10,000 for charity.

De Cordova said: “I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many traders that can trace their connections with the market back five or six generations.”

The market itself can trace its history in the capital back to the 1600s, but was relocated to Nine Elms in 1975.

Today, New Covent Garden Market is the largest wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market in the country, supplying 40% of the fresh fruit and vegetables eaten outside of the home in London, as well as 75% of the capital’s flowers.
