The Clapham branch of the UK’s largest charity for parents has announced that it raised £1,500.

Clapham National Childbirth Trust (NCT), which provides antenatal and postnatal help and support for parents, held a Nearly New Sale on Saturday 25 February.

More than 250 parents and visitors were encouraged to buy quality baby clothes, toys and equipment – enjoying a 70% credit crunch discount on their retail price.

The event was given its name as it urges parents to sell their unwanted baby goods, which are in nearly new condition and have often only been used by one child, instead of throwing them away.

The sale was organised and run by volunteers from the Clapham branch and is one of twenty Gold Standard rated NCT sales, acknowledging the quality and success of the sales.

The fundraiser also included a bakery stall where homemade cakes and hot drinks were sold.

The money raised will allow the branch to continue offering vital local support and services for parents and expectant parents and allow the national charity to train new staff.

Amie Adeleke, mum-of-one, said: “The day was brilliant! My little girl’s just turned two and she’s growing out of clothes quicker than I thought – buying credit crunch clothes at this sale is an ideal way not to break the bank.

“I’ll definitely be telling my friends about sales like this and can’t wait for the next one.”

Natalie Thomas, Nearly New Sale Coordinator, said: “We were delighted with the Nearly New Sale having made hundreds of pounds, which will go towards supporting the NCT’s work with parents.

“Local parents were also chuffed with the bargains on offer.  One family picked up a bagful of designer baby clothes plus a rocking horse for their baby boy – at a fraction of high street prices.”

She added:  “Parents keep telling us how much they love coming to our sales, especially in these tough economic times.”

The NCT has been helping parents since 1956 and has over 100,000 members.

Last year, around 200,000 parents attended an NCT Nearly New Sale, raising more than £1 million to fund the charity’s vital work.

The NCT has 317 branches in total across the UK and they strive to provide parents with accurate and impartial information so they can make informed decisions about their family lives.

Lara-Jane Sharpe, a new mum-of-one, said: “I’ve only just had my first child and the antenatal course really helped me practice birthing positions.

“Now that I’ve had my baby I’ll definitely be going to the Early Day groups, especially because I’m only 19 years old and want the very best for Rio.”

Clapham NCT will be holding a Maternity Nearly New Sale evening where expectant mums can shop for stylish maternity wear at bargain prices on Wednesday 25 April.
