New LGBTQIA+ collective holds sold-out watch parties after BBC cancels ‘I Kissed A Girl’

A new London based LGBTQIA+ community has kickstarted their events with sold out watch parties of the BBC’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’ to protest its cancellation.

The lesbian dating show runs on a similar format to ITV’s Love Island, but for the first 10 girls who arrive at the Italian masseria, a kiss at first sight awaits with their pre-chosen pairing.

Lez Hang Out was designed to give queer people a space to meet up, do creative hobbies together, make friends and create relationships, without alcohol.

But, when the show was cancelled in March this year, the founder decided to run watch party events, to show the BBC that representation matters.

Founder of Lez Hang Out, Amy Hough, said: “As a queer person, it constantly feels like our rights are being taken away.

“We don’t have a lot of representation, LGBTQ people are always on the cutting board and are always axed first.

“The current climate, especially towards trans people, is very very heavy and it’s going backwards, so events like this bring people together.

“Everyone is like-minded, everyone wants the same thing, and we want our rights to be prominent and for people to be talking about it.”

The event is in collaboration with trans-led charity, Not A Phase, who aim to uplift and support transgender and gender diverse adults throughout their lives.

For tickets to the final watch party, and other events head to: The Ultimate Finale: I Kissed a Girl Screening & Afterparty! Tickets, Friday, July 17-Saturday, July 18  •  8 PM-2:30 AM | Eventbrite
