A crowd of more than a hundred people have gathered and formed a human chain in Westminster to call for the release of former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan.
UK members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a political party set up by Khan, have alleged they are being targeted and suppressed by the military in a move which has destroyed democratic values in Pakistan.
They further claimed that on the 26 November 2024 army forces open fired and ‘massacred’ peaceful protestors who were demonstrating against Khan’s imprisonment, however there is no official evidence to support this.
The crimes against Khan include the leaking of state secrets, inciting violence and disruption and corruption.
Protestors argue that these charges are false and that the army are launching a politically motivated campaign to silence him and block his return to power.
Organisers and UK members of the Pakistani diaspora have also become increasingly concerned of the treatment of Khan while in custody and are calling for transparency over his situation.
The Pakistani army denies these accusations and maintains that Khan is a criminal who is ‘mentally unwell’.
