Non-League Day: One for the purists

There’s nothing quite like going to a lower league game. The connection with the players, the closeness to the pitch, the price of the pints.

While Sky Sports clambers to fill a Premier League-less weekender with the UEFA Nations League, many fans will be making the trip to a non-league fixture. The uniqueness, the rawness of going to see Tooting and Mitcham play in a mid-table game is a day where as a fan you are fuelled purely by the love of the game and not all the unnecessary nonsense that comes with it.

Lower league teams look at this weekend as one where they can attempt to make a name for themselves, providing Mourinho doesn’t show up unannounced at the Corinthian Casuals game in search of a replacement for Victor Lindelof.

So, who can you go and see this weekend? Well, the aforementioned Corinthians take on Hornchurch at 3pm on Saturday as they look to build on their 2-0 win over Whitehawk last time out. Sitting second bottom and with just eight points from eight games, the Casuals need all the help they can get at the moment. So, throw them a bone if you’ve got Saturday afternoon free.

There are also a number of short away-day trips you can make in support of the south west London clubs this weekend. Hampton and Richmond travel to Wealdstone in search of a win to not only boost their promotion chances but also with the hope of going into next weekend’s vital FA Cup tie in a confident mood.

Relegation-lingering Tooting and Mitcham travel to title-challenging Cheshunt in what on paper presents a difficult task for a side that has just one league win in four.

If after all that, if none of those take the biscuit, there’s always Kingstonian FC, who face the difficult task of travelling to high-flying Worthing in search of a third win in four.

Sometimes football fans can be deceived into thinking that the 4pm match on Super Sunday is the only thing that matters in English football at that time. If every single football fan got themselves down to a match this Saturday, regardless of the result, very few will regret it.
