Three could well become Jodie Burrage’s magic number after sealing a memorable maiden Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon.
Burrage, who is supported by the LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme, was handed an intriguing first round test against America’s Caty McNally at the All England Club.
And in a hugely impressive display of aggressive grass court tennis, the Kingston player eased her way to a 6-1 6-3 triumph to reach a Grand Slam second round for the first time.
Dropping just three games in the second set – in a match that took place on Court 3 and on her third Wimbledon appearance – Burrage was left on the highest of highs after arguably the biggest day of her career.
“I was stoked to play on Court 3,” said Burrage. “I’ve always said I absolutely love that court.
“I always wanted to play on that court. It’s such a good vibe. I’m glad I won my first match on it. It was a good omen, I guess.
“There’s actually a lot of relief. It took me a few match points to get over the line – it’s never simple with me. I’m very happy with how I played, how I handled myself on court. I really enjoyed every moment of it, and hopefully can take that into the next match.
“To sit here saying I’ve won my first round at Wimbledon, hopefully going to be in the top 100 in two weeks, I was not expecting that, but I’m very happy that it’s happened.
“I’m just very happy, I think the smile says it all – my first win at Wimbledon!”
Burrage faces an intriguing test next against Daria Kasatkina, the 11th seed in the women’s singles draw this year.
Kasatkina was a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2018 – where it took eventual champion Angelique Kerber to beat her – and was runner-up at the LTA’s Rothesay International Eastbourne last weekend.
Burrage added: “I haven’t thought about it much, but obviously she’s a great player.
“She made finals last week in Eastbourne. It’s going to be a very tough match. But I’ll go out there, give my all, fight like I always do, and see what happens.”
