Free sporting events will be held across the borough of Richmond during the weekend of Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 April.

The events will be held in commemoration of the 100 day countdown until the Olympics begin, with a further event being held in the future to commemorate the 50 day countdown.

During the weekend, events including archery, table tennis, handball, trampolining and wheelchair basketball will be on offer to people of all ages.

Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture, Cllr Pamela Fleming said: “We are delighted to be opening the doors of our borough’s fitness centres in order to encourage people to get into the Olympic sporting spirit.”

The centres offering the free sporting events will be: Hampton Sports and Fitness Centre, Orleans Park Sports Centre, Teddington Sports Centre, Teddington Pools and Fitness Centre, Shene Sports and Fitness Centre and Whitton Sports Centre.

There will also be a separate event on May 19 called RISE which is to be held at Shene Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday 19 May.

RISE will be promoting sport and exercise for disabled people for all ages.

On Sunday 24 June cycling fans will also be able to get involved in Skyride, a community bike ride which offers a way for people to explore the Richmond area.

Anyone wishing to find out more about the events on offer should call Richmond Council’s contact centre on 08456 122660.
