Kensington community projects underway following £1.2m Grenfell fund

Youth fitness training, boxing lessons and child play and development sessions are among 40 community projects underway in North Kensington thanks to more than £1.2 million from the second round of the Grenfell Projects Fund.

The projects, which also include arts and crafts workshops and a social support group, were selected based on feedback and scoring from more than 1,400 local residents and a resident-led panel.

Recipients of money from the fund, which was introduced as part of the council’s five-year Grenfell Recovery Strategy, all contribute towards North Kensington’s community-led recovery following the Grenfell tragedy.

Sof McVeigh, the council’s Lead Member for Communities, said: “We’re incredibly pleased that so many amazing community projects are benefiting from the second round of the Grenfell Projects Fund, and we can’t wait to see local people making the most of the services on offer under the programme.”

North Kensington residents have also been invited by the council to attend an event next week where they can learn more about the projects that have been funded.

The event, taking place at Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre on Tuesday 26 July, gives attendees the chance to meet all 40 project providers face-to-face and visit interactive information stands to find out more about what’s on offer.

Youth Action Alliance’s North Kensington Youth and Community Festival was one of the first projects to launch, attracting over 3000 North Kensington residents to a free family fun day in June.

Alessana Inèz Hall, Events Lead from Youth Action Alliance said: “We were very excited to be able to host the North Kensington Youth and Community Festival again with the help of the Grenfell Projects Fund.

“The money enabled us to make the festival even bigger and extra special this year, with more activities on offer to mark the five-year anniversary of Grenfell.”

The event on Tuesday 26 July will take place from 6.30 until 8pm at Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre, W10 5YG.

If you’d like to attend, please register online here or simply turn up on the day.
