Morden Underground Station, which lacks public toilet facilities

Morden Tube station public toilets still not ready nearly two months after planned opening

Public toilets at Morden Underground Station remain closed despite London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan’s pledge they would reopen in autumn.

Khan announced in February that the public toilets at Morden station would be recommissioned and opened to the public in autumn, after being closed for nearly 30 years.

His pledge followed several years of campaigning by local politicians and volunteer campaign groups like More Loos for Merton.

Despite a publicised opening date of 15 November, campaigners remain in the dark some seven weeks later as to why the toilets at Morden Underground Station are still boarded up.

More Loos for Merton campaigner Keith Davis told the South West Londoner: “A week before they were due to be opened, we were told the ceremony had been put on hold, and it’s been absolute radio silence since then.

“The construction is complete as far as we’re aware, and the toilets are ready to go, but they remain locked for whatever reason.

“We are really frustrated because it took a lot of effort with the campaigning.”

Davis has campaigned with the group since 2022 and has gained hundreds of signatures from Merton residents while petitioning with independent Morden Park councillor Stephen Mercer.

He says Night Tube terminus station Morden is desperately lacking facilities, with the nearest public toilet located three fare zones away in Elephant and Castle, forcing revellers to frequently urinate around the station after nights out in central London.

On the delayed opening, a spokesperson for Transport for London said: “We are working hard to ensure these new customer toilets meet the highest standards.

“During the final checks of the new facilities, we identified some issues that need to be resolved before opening, but we are progressing as quickly as possible, and we expect the customer toilets to open soon.

“We will provide an update in due course.”

A new opening date for the toilets at Morden Underground Station is set to be announced on 15 January during Mayor’s Question Time, in response to London Assembly Member Leonie Cooper’s scheduled question.
