Social supermarkets are set to play a bigger role in tackling London’s food poverty crisis amidst unprecedented price rises.
These membership-based shops offer products at up to 70% less than mainstream supermarkets, giving users the dignity of choice while remaining affordable.
According to a recent survey carried out by the Food Standards Agency, one in 20 people reported they had used a social supermarket in the past 12 months.
Peter, a senior worker at social supermarket Peckham Pantry, said: “We’re an initiative that helps people who find it difficult to afford food and helps them find access to healthy food.
“The amount of people that are coming in now is much more than we used to.”
