November 2023 in review

Here are the biggest news events from November 2023.

November was dominated with coverage of the Israel-Hamas war as the conflict entered its second month.

At the beginning of the month, there were political debates in the UK over whether a Pro-Palestine march could be organised on Armistice Day.

The protest went ahead and there was violence by far-right counter protesters around the Cenotaph.

At the end of the month, there was a six-day ceasefire in the conflict which saw Hamas release 110 hostages held in Gaza.

240 Palestinians were also released from Israeli jails as part of the deal.

The temporary ceasefire allowed those in Gaza to conduct burials and saw an increase in the amount of aid allowed in following reports of little food and drinking water and hospitals running out of energy.

Fighting resumed on 1 December.

In the UK, the government faced multiple controversies culminating in a government re-shuffle which saw David Cameron return to cabinet.

Now Lord Cameron, was appointed Foreign Secretary, and former Home Secretary Suella Braverman was moved to the backbenches to be replaced by James Cleverly.

Later in the month, Rishi Sunak cancelled a meeting with the Greek prime minister because of a row over the Elgin marbles.

The Parthenon statues, housed in the British museum, have been the centre of an ongoing dispute as to whether they should return to Greece. King Charles III subtly stepped into this one as he was stopped wearing a tie covered in Greek flags during his visit to COP28.
