High Tide Festival in Twickenham

WATCH: From Eel Pie to High Tide: the free Twickenham music festival making waves

Twickenham was once synonymous with the vibrant music scene of the 1960s, with its Eel Pie Island once hosting the Rolling Stones, the Who and David Bowie.

Now, the scene is being revived through an annual not-for-profit festival.

High Tide co-founder and director Kevin Jones owns Eel Pie Records, named after the famed island it sits across from.

His work as the co-founder of the festival alongside business partner Phil Penmam since its inception in 2019, has led to him being shortlisted for the Community Heroes Award in Richmond.

“I started High Tide with a mission to reignite that spirit of Eel Pie Island when it was in it’s heyday,” said Jones.

“It must have been so exciting when it was brand new, being 16-years-old, 18-years-old, hearing that music. That must have been the biggest thrill on the planet.”

High Tide began on 27 July and stretched throughout the river-side town with free performances on open-air stages as well as inside pubs and businesses, covering 17 stages across the town.

Jones added: “Business do see this as a good thing for the town. It helps with the bottom-line on the day and helps over the longer-term to attract people to Twickenham.”
