Croydon pub to host pancake themed ‘sports day’ to support charity for seriously ill kids

A Croydon pub is flipping pancake making on its head on Shrove Tuesday by mixing it with a school sports day-style event to raise money for charity.

The event, held every year at The Oval Tavern in Croydon, pitches teams from pubs and venues in a pancake-making competition that also includes a sack race and relay race.

Five teams compete this year in what landlady Esther Sutton hopes will be as successful as last year.

“It’s all for a good cause but some teams can get quite competitive,” she said.

“It is the first time we will get the local church involved as well, so we’re really looking forward to it.”

This year the teams will be raising money for William’s Wishes, a charity founded by the family of William Milne.

William lived 80% of the first four years of his life in hospital, where he faced numerous operations and relied on an intravenous infusion of nutrition, fluid, and electrolytes delivered straight into his blood system.

William’s life was saved by a small bowel transplant in 2008, but he required another, which was successfully had his liver, bowel and pancreas re-transplant through the night on December 19 last year.

The charity donates gifts to children awaiting intestinal transplants and also hopes to raise donor organ awareness, especially among families.

The event starts at 5:30pm and also includes a three-legged race, a hobby horse race and a straight forward sprint.

Enthusiastic participants will be rewarded with a traditional feast – all the pancakes made during the competition!
