LISTEN: Reducing postnatal depression through singing

A singing programme, based across south east and south west London has been designed to reduce symptoms of postnatal depression by uplifting and empowering new mothers.

Breathe Melodies for Mums is run by the social enterprise group Breathe Arts Health Research, and is based on extensive scientific research conducted by the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London

The 2017 study found a 10-week singing intervention could reduce symptoms of postnatal depression by up to 40 percent, with the benefits being sustained for six months after the intervention.

Programme founder and managing director Yvonne Farquharson said: “We choose songs which help women let go and release their emotions.

“Women are often holding a lot during this early stage of motherhood, so the music has been carefully selected to meet their specific needs.”
