A south west London woman has rescued, sterilized and vaccinated over 70 stray cats as part of a self-funded charity she runs from her home, in an effort to reduce uncontrolled breeding in stray cat ‘colonies’.
Sharon Bierer runs the Animal Welfare International charity from her Wandsworth home, where she gets stray kittens fit for adoption by ensuring they are healthy, socialised and not able to have babies themselves, which can lead to kittens being abandoned.
The charity began when Bierer’s daughter looked after a stray cat in India, which led to them starting a project ensuring the free-roaming cats and dogs can’t reproduce constantly, and they also sterilise 25 cats and dogs a week in Sri Lanka.
In 2025, her work in London began when Bierer saw an advert from a woman who was reporting that 20-plus cats and kittens were turning up at her doorstep in an estate near Wimbledon.
