This year would have marked Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday. More than 60 years after her death, she remains one of the most recognisable and photographed women in history. But what is it about Marilyn that continues to capture the public imagination?

At the Iconic Images Gallery’s ICON exhibition in London, rare photographs offer further insight into the woman behind the Hollywood legend.
Featuring work from some of the world’s most celebrated photographers, the exhibition explores how Monroe’s image was created, preserved and reinterpreted over time. The South West Londoner visited the exhibition to find out how her legacy continues to evolve – and why, a century after her birth, Marilyn Monroe is still one of the world’s most enduring, and often most misunderstood, cultural icons.
