The London Gaelic Choir performs their Christmas carol

LISTEN: Meet the London Gaelic Choir

The London Gaelic Choir, founded in 1891, is the world’s oldest Scottish Gaelic choir.

The non-auditioned choir is called “Còisir Lunnainn” in Gaelic, and has the motto “Ceòl—Càirdeas—Cliù,” which the group says roughly translates as “Music—Friendship—Renown”.

On Saturday the 13 December 2025, the choir held its Christmas carol concert at Lumen United Reform Church in the London borough of Camden.

The performance included an array of songs in Gaelic, with some encouraging audience participation, followed by mince pies and mulled wine.

Members of the choir say that singing in Gaelic provides them with a sense of community, helps them to improve their language skills, and plays an important role in preserving Gaelic culture.

Co-conductor Fergus Reoch said: “All the magic of human existence is held in language.”
