An exciting vintage fair is coming to Brixton on Saturday to raise funds for Age UK Lambeth social events scheme.
The charity is hoping that the event will attract a younger audience through the vintage inspired fundraiser.
Visitors will be able to browse through a treasured trove of vintage clothes, vinyl jewellery and household items.
Claire Nethersole, 39, community and corporate fundraiser for Age UK, said: “I’m going to be there, I’m going to be baking cakes for it, and I’m really excited.
“There’s people selling clothes, jewellery, homeware, just old stuff that’s quite popular for people to have in their homes.”
Proudly affiliated to national Age UK, the Lambeth patch is a local independent charity, supporting older people in the borough for over 70 years, offering a range of services in a bid to help reduce social isolation and loneliness.
The charity runs nearly 100 events each month, varying from regular classes of Zumba and yoga to cultural trips like gallery exhibitions and jazz clubs – these fundraising events help the charity to pay for its services.
The MYsocial service is a calendar of events set up by Age UK Lambeth to help people discover friendships, connect with their community and to do things that make them happy – members of the social will be attending the fair.
Mrs Nethersole said: “It’s really nice because it’s being run by our MYsocial members – they’re finding all the vintage stuff from their own homes and they’re going to be running the stalls.
“It’s kind of them helping other people to become MYsocial members.”
Each event is hosted so guests arrive to see a friendly face, including help from volunteers to assure they feel welcomed.
Age UK Lambeth offer at home services such as DIY, cooking, cleaning and shopping, the befriending service to beat loneliness with a visit from a volunteer befriender and the Hospital to Home service, which helps people to feel settled and secure at home following a hospital stay.
The goals of the charity are to have a real impact on the ability of older people to live independent lives, support their own well-being and actively contribute to society.
Mrs Nethersole added: “We encourage people to get out of their homes and meet people.
“We have a really high rate of satisfaction amongst our members and like I said a wide variety of events.
“If yoga isn’t your thing then maybe the blues bar will be, there’s something for everyone.”
Mrs Nethersole said the charity makes it inclusive, people who can’t book online can access a computer club, and leaflets are sent by post and email to suit everyone.
A donation of £3 to the charity can provide materials for a skills share session for one member, which includes art, dance, cooking and lots more to enable people to have fun learning and teaching others.
Previous events run by Age UK Lambeth include a comedy night held in March which saw a younger crowd.
The Lambeth walk was held in May, where members walked a certain amount of steps each day and got sponsored to raise money for the charity.
The fair is taking place on Saturday 15 June at Vida’s, just off Windrush Square in SW2, and the timeless event starts at 11am until 3pm on Saltoun Road. Entry to the fair is by donation and all the money raised will go towards funding the MYsocial service.
