Eat to save the world: Tooting’s sustainable food festival keeps on growing

A free Tooting food festival is promising a feast for the senses in a celebration of sustainability, local produce and home cooking next month.

The Tooting Foodival was set up 11 years ago by the non-profit organisation Transition Town Tooting aiming to help the community to make a change to how people live in light of climate change.

In an area designated a plastic-free zone, it will see locally grown produce from home growers cooked by local chefs live on Hereward Road to the soundtrack of local musicians.

As a community, chefs of all ages come together to create a completely self-sufficient three course meal for a £1 donation, and there will also be a Top Tooting Cook competition.

There is also a diverse array of other activities such as upcycling and recycling and Jeni’s Crafty Art station.

Wandsworth Council has recently been taking action to combat the impact that climate change has on its residents, such as holding a car free day in June, but this one-day festival shows residents have been taking initiative together for over a decade.

Focussing on the general well being of people, the organisers aim to encourage a home grown way of living, extending this to having solely volunteers run the festival.

This hive of environmental action in Tooting attempts to draw the community to fight the wider issue of climate change together.

The Foodival takes place on September 15 on Upper Tooting Road.
