Double delight for Surbiton as men and women’s hockey teams net wins

Surbiton Hockey Club tasted success with both their men’s and women’s first teams securing victories this weekend.

A brace from England and Great Britain striker Matt Daly helped the men defeat Southgate 3-1 yesterday to keep up their 100% record in the NOW: Pensions Men’s Premier League this campaign.

Both of Daly’s strikes came from penalty corners and Alan Forsyth secured the victory in the last minute from open play.

Surbiton are one of four teams to have won both of their opening league games and lie fourth in the table.

Meanwhile, the ladies bounced back from an opening day draw to thump the University of Birmingham 4-0 on Saturday.

New Zealand international Julia King came off the bench to score just 18 minutes into her debut.

Georgie Twigg netted either side of King’s debut goal, the second expertly dispatched from the penalty spot.

In the 56th minute Jo Hunter – a summer acquisition from Leicester – bagged her first goal in Surbiton colours to round off the scoring.

The win lift the ladies to third in the Investec Women’s Premier Division, two points behind leaders Clifton.

Next Saturday sees Surbiton host Beeston at Sugden Road in a men’s and women’s double header starting a 12 noon.
