Norrie downs Thompson at Queen’s to clinch quarter-finals

British No.1 Cameron Norrie battled his way into the quarter-finals of the cinch Championships, with a hard-fought victory over Jordan Thompson.

Norrie went a set down to the Australian but impressively fought back to win 4-6 6-3 6-2 to reach the last eight.

“It was the perfect match today to do that against a player who is playing really well on the grass and was serving well and has played already two or three tournaments on the grass,” said Norrie. “To win against Tommo today was a great win for me.

“I was playing well, he was playing really well, serving well. There were just a couple of points on that first set and I felt like I really didn’t need to change that much, just keep my energy high.

“I enjoyed it, and it was nice to get through the match from a set down.”

However it was defeat for wild card Ryan Peniston, who valiantly went down 6-3 6-4 to second seed Holger Rune.

“I was happy with how I competed,” said Peniston. “I was pleased with how I fought and sometimes it just doesn’t go the way you want. Hats off to Holger, he played a clean match today.

“He served really well, I didn’t get much look into any of his service games and his attitude was great, he seemed pretty composed and hats off to him and he has improved quite a few bits of his game.”

Top doubles seed Neal Skupski and Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof came through a tough battle against former Wimbledon champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.

Skupski and Koolhof went a set down but fought back to win 6-7(3) 7-6(3) 10-7 and set up a quarter-final match up with Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, who beat Jamie Murray and Michael Venus 7-6(8) 7-6(5).

And third seeds Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram also safely made it through, beating Andre Goransson and Ben McLachlan 7-6(4) 7-6(4).
