AFC Wimbledon Ladies and Girls to take centre stage at Morecombe match to promote women’s game

AFC Wimbledon Ladies and Girls are aiming to impress the Dons’ crowd with their football skills in a presentation during the men’s home clash against Morecombe today.

Various events will take place before, during and after the League Two game at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, to promote and raise funds for the ladies’ and girls’ teams.

There will be the chance for supporters to take part in a Speed Kick competition outside the stadium and the girls’ under-12s will be entertaining thousands of fans at half time with their football skills.

AFC Wimbledon Ladies play in the London and South East Regional Women’s Premier Division and last season reached the first round proper of the FA Cup.

They are enjoying a successful season so far under manager Chris Lyons and currently sit third in the league after a convincing 4-1 win over Crawley Wasps last weekend.

The girls’ teams range from under-9s up to under-18s and a ladies development team was recently established as a pathway to the seniors’ team.

Today’s event is being hosted by the AFC Wimbledon Foundation which works hard to encourage young girls in local schools to participate in football.

The foundation will be hoping to continue promoting girls football with some of the money raised.
