David Beckham described being made a knight in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours as truly humbling and an emotional moment.
The former England football captain received his knighthood alongside stars such as Gary Oldman and Roger Daltrey, and received his honour in recognition for his impact on the sporting world and commitment to charity.
Beckham, 50, is an ambassador for UNICEF, and since last year, an ambassador for the King’s Foundation in support of the King’s education scheme.
Beckham said: “I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.
“It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”
Beckham added he was fortunate to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.
The Leytonstone-born football star played 115 times for England and has played for some of the greatest European clubs, such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris St-Germain, and in MLS for the LA Galaxy.
Beckham retired in 2013, and was reportedly nominated for a knighthood in 2011.
Sky Sports News presenter James Green said: “It’s a surprise it hasn’t happened sooner.
“Memories of that goal from the halfway line at Selhurst Park back in 1996 set David Beckham on his way to stardom.
“He was unique, he was special and the ability he had in that right foot made him stand out on the pitch.”
Green described Beckham as one of a kind, person and brand, someone who – Argentina ’98 aside – has represented his country in the best possible way.”
Former defence secretary Penny Mordaunt has been awarded a damehood, alongside stars such as Elaine Paige and Pat Baker.
The Traitors star, Claudia Winkleman, and her co-host on Strictly Come Dancing, Tess Daly will receive MBEs, alongside darts world champions Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.
