Wandsworth to choose their sporting heroes

The annual Active Wandsworth Awards will take place on Friday 3rd March at the Wandsworth Civic Suite celebrating the achievements of the local sporting community and heroes.

In its 25th year, the awards evening will be hosted by Sky Sports News presenter and reporter, Emma Paton best known for her presenting of the World Darts Championship.

She will be joined by nominees for the Sports Person of the Year award and Commonwealth Beach Volleyball medallists, Joaquin and Javier Bello to help celebrate Wandsworth’s local heroes.

Wandsworth cabinet member for the environment, Judi Gasser, said: “All on the shortlist are very much deserving of their nomination across the ten awards.

“Now, more than ever, sport and physical activity play an important part in all our lives and to recognise everyone, from the talented athlete to the amazing coaches and volunteers who make it happen”

Both the Sports Person and Junior Sports Person categories are packed with talent including Olympic athletes and those breaking barriers at club level and the awards aim to highlight successes both on and off the field.

Several of the awards will now highlight the fantastic work done by volunteers and community organisations how their connections with their community have helped to support those who have experienced inequalities and barriers over the last couple of years.

The high standard of nominations across the ten award categories demonstrates not only the incredible sporting talent in Wandsworth but also the amazing commitment of grass roots organisations.

There are ten categories and awards will be given for Active School of the year, Young Volunteer and Volunteer of the year, The Mayor’s Award and many more.

An exciting list of nominees includes cricketer Maddie Blinkhorn Jones, Bromwood Football Club and Judo player Julia Marczak.

The event will be produced and delivered by Enable, a not-for-profit organisation in collaboration with Wandsworth Council.
