More than 30,000 people have visited Tooting Bec Lido over the past three weeks as locals flock to cool down from the hot weather.

Visitor numbers to the second largest freshwater pool in Europe were ten times higher than during the same period last year.

Both The Times and The Daily Telegraph recently listed the lido as one of London’s best outdoor pools, and it seems that people across the capital think the same thing.

“With the sweltering temperatures we’ve seen over the past few weeks it’s no surprise that the lido has proved so popular,” said Environment spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook.

“When it’s as hot as it has been recently there really isn’t a better place in the city to cool off and enjoy the summer.”

The South London gem is one of only a handful of remaining open air swimming pools in London, measuring 91.5 metres in length and includes an extensive space for sunbathing and picnics.

Over the past decade, Wandsworth Council has spent £1.5million to improve the facilities and ensure its long term future.

DC Leisure, which manages the lido as well as the borough’s seven sports and recreation centres and swimming pools, has recently been crowned the 2013 ‘leisure centre operator of the year’ in the ukactive Flame Awards.
