Beddington incinerator set for expansion despite health fears

A 10% increase in waste burnt at the Beddington incinerator is set to be approved this month by the Environmental Agency.

Viridor, a waste management company, has applied for the increase which would see more than 382,286 tonnes of waste burnt at the site every year.

Since the construction of the incinerator in 2018, residents in and around Sutton have had concerns about the smoke from the chimneys and how it is affecting their health.

Labour councillor for Hackbridge, Dave Tchil, said he regularly smells burning plastic coming from the incinerator, which is acrid and hot to breathe in.

Residents are calling on the Environment Agency to prevent the increase to make the area greener and healthier.
