Two cannabis factories in Merton were shut down as part of an offensive against drug dealing yesterday.

Six arrests were also made under Operation Hawk, an initiative to tackle street-level drug dealing across London.

Along with 15 warrants being executed as a result of the raid, Merton Police announced more officer patrols will now be assigned in prevalent drug areas in the borough.

Operation Hawk was first announced by the Metropolitan Police this month to refocus attention on street-level drug dealing across London.

Specialist officers, alongside Safer Neighbourhoods teams, have since been carrying out daily operations using local community intelligence.

Its launch followed Merton’s Safer Transport Team carrying out an operation involving drugs-dogs and a screening arch at Wimbledon’s tube and rail stations two weeks ago.

Eight people had been found to be carrying drugs and one person was arrested for carrying an offensive weapon.

Drug seizures were made across the capital yesterday, dubbed by the Metropolitan Police as the ‘Day of Action’. Raids occurred across 32 boroughs between 7am and 10pm.

In total £2.6million of cannabis was removed from London’s streets, with more than 350 arrests being made and nearly 2,000 officers involved in the widespread operation.

Commander Mak Chishty, MPS operational lead for Operation Hawk, said: “This has been an enormously successful day of action – but isn’t confined to just one day of activity.

“Drug dealing damages communities. It generates crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. The MPS is determined to tackle this issue head on by bringing together our resources to reclaim and help repair areas affected by drug dealing.”
