WATCH: Wimbledon’s first repair cafe opens to combat landfill waste

Two local environmental groups have opened Wimbledon’s first repair cafe where volunteers will help residents mend their broken items for free.

Merton Friends of the Earth (FotE) and Sustainable Merton have partnered up to launch the new venture, which takes place at St Marks Church on the last Saturday of every month.

FotE co-coordinator Mariana Pacheco said: “It’s wonderful to be part of a community event and support each other.”

Mayor of Merton Cllr Shuile Syeda paid the group a visit on opening day, and said these initiatives are brilliant in bringing the community together.

In response to Mayor Seyda’s appearance, Pacheco was jubilant.

She said: “It’s amazing [for] politicians to be in touch with our community and see what’s happening.”
