School children bring home-grown produce to Borough Market

Children from 12 London primary schools showcased their homegrown produce at Borough Market on Thursday 1 October, as part of School Food Matters’ Young Marketeers Harvest Market Day.

Pupils put their teamwork to the test as they sold fruit and vegetables they’d grown themselves.

Visitors were treated to a colourful selection of vegetables, including tomatoes, beetroot, salad, beans, herbs and broccoli.

Now in its 15th year, Young Marketeers is a food education programme run by charity School Food Matters.

Stephanie Slater MBE, Founder and Chief Executive of the charity, said: “Food education is a vital life skill.

“Hands-on experiences like Young Marketeers give children the chance to learn by doing.”

Throughout the programme, pupils have been supported by food educators who have shared their expertise in growing and marketing produce.

Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Claire Sheppard said: “Being Southwark’s first Green Mayor, I believe very strongly in the importance of teaching young people horticulture.

“It’s a really positive event to get our young people involved in.”

This year’s event raised money for Plan Zheroes, an organisation distributing surplus food to charities and communities across London.

Dee Vadukul from Plan Zheroes said: “Working alongside School Food Matters is a wonderful opportunity for us to have contact with the next generation.”

Since 2011, the programme has raised more than £16,450 for charitable causes.
