A fly-tipper caught on CCTV was given a £1,000 fine after dumping a fridge on a Balham street corner.
Wandsworth CCTV helped identify the individual and their car’s number plate.
A fine of £1,000 was issued in this case, as the council threatens further penalties of up to £50,000 or even twelve month prison sentences for larger scale fly-tipping.
Wandsworth cabinet member for environment Paul White said: “We hate fly-tipping as much as our residents do, and that’s why we take a zero-tolerance approach to this kind of selfish behaviour.
“This outcome shows we are serious about tackling illegal fly-tipping in Wandsworth, and I’d like to thank the enforcement teams who identified the individual and issued the fine in a swift manner.”
This crackdown on fly-tipping is part of Wandsworth’s Cleaner Borough Plan which aims to streamline waste and recycling services, improving the overall sustainability of the borough.
Wandsworth Council claims the plan has saved £1.3million, which will now be reinvested into keeping the borough’s streets clean.
As part of this plan, CCTV monitoring in busy Wandsworth hotspots has increased, with 1,200 cameras operating around the borough.
Despite this, Wandsworth residents are still expressing their disappointment at the state of the borough’s streets.
One Southfields resident said: “I’m not sure I can see much of an improvement on our streets at the moment.
“Rubbish seems to spread everywhere across the street with bins either overflowing or completely full.”
Another Southfields resident expressed this same concern, claiming the issue of overflowing bins peaked during the Wimbledon tennis championships.
The council claim more than 6,500 tonnes of Wandsworth residents’ recycling has been collected over the past year, the equivalent of 400 double-decker buses.
The council also announced extra funding into CCTV coverage and monitoring hours earlier in June.
