CCTV appeal after Croydon High Street assault left woman temporarily blinded

Police in Croydon have issued CCTV footage of a man they want to speak to in connection with an assault which caused a woman to temporarily lose her sight.

The incident, which occurred on February 26 at around 3am, happened on Croydon High Street after the 23-year-old victim asked the man to get out of a taxi she and her friend had booked.

The victim had walked out of a bar to get in the taxi and found that four men were standing near the vehicle, with one getting inside.

The victim said to the man that she had booked the taxi and asked him to get out.

A verbal altercation ensued before the man got out and attempted to punch her. He missed but then hit her again, causing her to temporarily lose her sight. He then made off.

Officers were flagged down members of the public who informed them that the woman had been assaulted.

The suspect is described as a black man, aged approximately 25-30 years old, with a black beard. He was wearing dark top and jeans.

PC Jason Sim, of Croydon CID, said: “This was a nasty assault on a young woman which left her hospitalised as a result of an injury to her eye.

Thankfully she has made a full recovery, but we ask the public to help us identify this man so we can bring him to justice.”
