During Carers Week 2025, Sutton Council proved their commitment to equality and diversity with their new Carers Strategy.
The five-year strategy sets out how the council and its partners are working with carers to improve access to information and services within the industry.
The Carers Strategy vision for 2030 includes improved awareness of the support available to carers, a commitment to working in partnership with carers to deliver the strategy and increased representation of carers from all communities across Sutton.
With the aim of improving awareness of the support available to carers, the council is spotlighting diverse voices in the health and social care.
Resident stories will be shared throughout the week to highlight the impact carers have on local families and communities.
Wendy Wo, a carer who also interpreted the Hong Kong Carer and Dementia Strategy group, appreciates the movement towards greater equality and said: “For me, an example of growing equality for carers is that my mum can now call the GP herself to make her own appointment.
“It’s progress, and as a carer, it’s something I really want to see: it’s less reliance on me, and at the same time, they can gain confidence in daily life.”
Sutton council will also continue their work with Sutton Carers centre as they prepare for the opening of the new Sutton Carers Centre opening on Friday June 13, 2025.
The new centre will be appreciated in Sutton where the 2021 census identified there were approximately 15,999 unpaid carers in the area.
Carer and chief executive, Sutton Carers Centre, Rachael MacLeod said: “This is a pivotal moment for unpaid Carers in Sutton.”
