A police officer from Wimbledon was arrested this morning as part of the inquiry into allegations of illegal payments by journalists to public officials.

Detectives from Operation Elveden, which was set up in the wake of the phone hacking scandal, arrested the 50-year-old Metropolitan Police employee at around 6am and carried out a search of the property.

This is the 60th arrest made as part of the investigation, in which nine people have been charged and four told they will face no further action.

The arrest came after information was provided by News Corporation’s management and standards committee.

Operation Elveden is the ongoing Met inquiry into allegations of inappropriate payments to public officials, and is being run alongside Operation Weeting, an investigation into phone hacking.
