London achieves major green milestone with over 2,000 zero-emission buses

London now operates over 2,000 zero-emission buses in a new green milestone announced by Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Transport for London’s (TfL) zero-emission bus fleet is the largest in western Europe.

This green milestone takes place as part of Khan’s ongoing action plan to clean up London’s toxic air, protect the environment and the health of Londoners.

Khan said: “It’s fantastic London is leading the charge with more than 2,000 zero-emission buses in the capital,

“I’m proud we’ve taken London’s bus network from strength to strength since I became mayor in 2016, increasing the size of the network, making transport greener and improving bus safety and customer experience.

“This is helping to clean up London’s toxic air, protecting the environment and the health of Londoners.”

Khan added the number of London’s red buses to go green has increased from 30 in 2016 to over 2,000 in 2025, meaning two in every nine buses in London are now zero-emission.

TfL’s buses which aren’t zero-emission all currently meet or top the EURO VI emission standards, meeting the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) requirements.

TfL’s director of buses Lorna Murphy said: “With more than 2,000 zero-emission buses on London’s roads and the addition of more fully electric routes like the 337, we are on a mission to transition to a fully zero-emission bus fleet, and continue to have the largest zero-emission bus fleet in Western Europe.

“Decarbonising the public transport network is essential to the mayor’s mission for London to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.”

London has lower CO2 emissions per passenger kilometres in comparison to cities such as New York and Vancouver.

London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth and the Labour group environment spokesperson Leonie Cooper said: “We’ve made great progress on air quality since then and as a result, children have healthier lungs and adults are at less risk of dementia.

“It’s a vital step in cleaning our air and creating healthier communities.”

Transport UK operates London’s newest fully-electric bus route, the 337, which runs between Clapham Junction and Richmond.

The zero-emission buses are designed to provide quieter, smoother journeys for customers as a result of fewer vibrations, along with offering USB charging points for customers to charge their phones whilst travelling.

Features of the new buses include a safer front-end design, and other safety features such as speed-limiting technology and audible warnings to inform pedestrians, plusimproved direct and indirect vision for drivers through camera monitoring rather than mirrors.
