A new bus route has been set up for students with learning difficulties around the Merton area.

The service, introduced by Merton Mencap, began this month and is free of charge for students who attend colleges in the local area.

It allows individuals with special needs the chance to travel independently whilst also remaining safe in a controlled environment.

The route starts from the S1 stop in Cricket Green, Mitcham, and will follow a pre-planned route before returning to the same position.

Students will also be given a map and have the opportunity to practice getting off at a number of different stops.

The monthly service will run on the second Wednesday of every month. There will be two sessions, one from 10.30 – 12, and one from 12.45 – 2.

Sara Gibbens, who works as a travel trainer for Mencap, said that it is an exciting time for everyone related with the scheme.

“I was blown away by the idea when I saw that several other boroughs were offering the service,” she said.

“I thought it was amazing and I said that we needed to get a service running in Merton. Everyone has been helping me throughout the last six months.”

TFL mentors will also be on hand to help with the running of the service whilst the safety officer from Merton will also participate.

Sara added: “The good thing is it’s a free service and it’s so great to have this available for everyone in the area.”
