President of European Commission pays tribute to Prince Philip

The President of the European Commission has paid tribute to Prince Philip in a heartfelt message.

Ursula von der Leyen sent out a sincere message to the royal family and the Queen after Prince Philip died.

The Queen’s partner of 73 years passed away this afternoon at the age of 99.

In a tweet she wrote: “I am saddened to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip.

“I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to Her Majesty The Queen, the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom on this very sad day.”

The BBC has suspended normal programming and the flags over Buckingham Palace are flying at half-mast.

The duke made his last public appearance in July 2020 when he transferred his ceremonial role as colonel-in-chief of The Rifles to his daughter-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Little is known about his funeral which is codenamed operation Forth Bridge, which he helped plan.
