Support services have been stepping in to help the thousands of people throughout London struggling with unemployment.
Recent figures published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) found that the unemployment rate in London was 7.6% in the final quarter of 2025, whilst the UK average was 5.2%.
As a significant portion of Londoners deal with the impact of unemployment and job uncertainty, organisations are offering support to those in need.
Sam Sorrenti, the assistant regional manager at Employment Plus, said: “We are still seeing the after-effects of Covid with people being isolated, and the impact of the cost of living on employed and unemployed people.”
Employment Plus is the Salvation Army’s specialist employability service, which provides tailored one-to-one support to those struggling to find work.
The organisation aims to assist those struggling with unemployment through skills development, career advice, job search support and more.
On 26 March, Employment Plus hosted its second employment and community fair in Croydon.
This was a free event where they offered employment advice, training, volunteering information and support services to those in need.
“Coming to an event like this can help build a person’s confidence, and they can meet a variety of people who are there to support them, as well as others who may be in the same position as they are,” Sorrenti said.
He emphasised the importance of events such as this and the ongoing availability of support services which help people navigate unemployment.
“The aim is to help people to have a better understanding of how they can be supported, not only going into sustainable employment but to make positive changes and to promote social inclusion,” Sorrenti said.
“We are helping people to build their confidence and motivation and helping them with their job searches, application forms and CVs.
“We can also refer people who may need additional help, such as mental health support, to other services that provide this.”
Any Londoners over the age of 18 struggling with unemployment are encouraged to get in touch via email: [email protected] or visit the Croydon Salvation Army, which is open Mondays to Thursdays from 10am to 4pm.
