Pining for a sustainable Christmas

With the capital proudly being the greenest city in the UK, Londoners are always looking for the best ways to be sustainable.

Pines and Needles have shared their top tips to keep your festive season as green as your Christmas tree.

Pines and Needles e-commerce director Veronika Kusak said: “We believe Christmas should be magical and sustainable.”

So here’s how you can start on making this your most eco-friendly Christmas yet.

The first step is getting a real Christmas tree.

Apart from the very real benefit of making your home smell like a dream, real trees use less raw material and energy than artificial trees, produce lower CO₂ emissions, and are fully recyclable and biodegradable.

If this is your first Christmas with a Nordmann, Fraser or Noble Fir, it’s important to know how to look after your tree so it lasts you all the way into the new year.

Kusak said: “With real trees it’s worth giving them a little time to acclimatise once they’re home. Letting the branches relax in their new environment can take anything from a couple of hours to overnight.”

Once you’ve got your tree set up, you can decorate it with eco-friendly ornaments made from natural materials like wood or paper.

This is a great time to create new festive traditions like spending a night watching Christmas films and making paper chains and paper snowflakes.

Kusak said decorating your tree will help branches settle quicker.

If crafts aren’t your thing, you can invest in Pines and Needles’ own range of decorations.

You can then reuse these ornaments next year and create a meaningful and unique collection of decorations over the years and curb any impulse buys of low-quality plastic baubles that may end up in landfills.

Disposing of your tree responsibly in the new year means it can be used as mulch for parks and pathways or biofuel.

Pines and Needles offer a collection to save you from adding ‘get rid of withering Christmas tree’ to your list of things to do in the new year.

Most London councils also offer a Christmas tree collection service.

It’s not too late to kickstart your conscious consumption Christmas.
