Lambeth is home to more smokers than other boroughs in South West London, data from the Office of National Statistics shows.
Over 11% of Lambeth residents over the age of 18 admitted to smoking cigarettes in the years 2020-2024 giving it the highest levels of smokers, with Richmond upon Thames the lowest at just over 6%.
Lambeth Council has launched its 6 for 2026 campaign this year to encourage more people to kick the habit by providing positive and action focussed steps.
Encouraging people to stop smoking has become a priority for the council after it was shown that smoking accounted for over 23% of deaths in the borough in 2019.
Councillor Nanda Manley-Browne, Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities, highlighted that smoking cessation programmes play a vital role in tackling health inequalities in the borough.
She said: “This campaign is about prevention, fairness, and giving people the right support to live healthier, longer lives – regardless of their circumstances.”
