Food-lovers were trick or treated to a spooktacular evening courtesy of Sweeney Todd at Putney Pies this weekend.

Those with a penchant for pie were not disappointed by the specially created Halloween menu.

Staff and customers alike channelled the spirit of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter by dressing up in their best Victorian costumes.

Assistant Manager, and professional actor Zachary Street, aka Sweeney Todd, said: “Last night was a real smasher, we had loads of people in the barber’s chair.

“The best reaction is from little kids, they really love the gore!”

Customers were greeted with disembodied shortbread fingers with surprisingly tasty hazelnut nails, as waiters warned: ‘Someone’s going to get slit.’

The freakish feast did not stop there – pumpkin mash, barber’s chicken pie with bloody cranberry and razor-sliced chocolate cake were just some of the highlights.

Mrs Lovett and Toby served up their ‘cannibal’ creations as Stephen Sondheim’s music filled the 60-seater restaurant.

Actor Olivia Matthews, who played Mrs Lovett said: “Last night we sold some priest, poet and grocer on the street – it was great!”

As customers devoured their pies created by executive chef Jack Tylus, Sweeney sidled up to customers and did what he does best – giving a very close shave indeed.

Victims were lathered with whipped cream shaving foam as maple syrup blood dripped from Sweeney’s razor blade.

Zachary and Olivia have portrayed the murderous duo before in their two year drama degrees and were a hit with customers.

Since opening three months ago, Putney Pies used Halloween to kick off what promises to be an action-packed year.

They are already planning more dramatic delights for Christmas – this time with turkey rather than customer pies!
