The accident black spot on Balham High Road that only this month saw yet another serious crash is being tackled by Tooting MP and mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan.
Mr Khan, along with Tooting Bec councillors Fleur Anderson and Rosena Allin-Khan, launched a petition today to urge Wandsworth Council and TfL to make the road safer.
Two people were left seriously injured during the morning rush hour July 7 after a collision between a cyclist and a motorcyclist on Balham High Road.
Witnesses tweeted their shock at what looked like ‘a horrific road accident’ and police were forced to close the road to investigate.
Following the latest incident, Mr Khan is stepping up pressure on the council to urgently introduce measures to make the road safer.
Mr Khan MP said: “We all know how dangerous this stretch of road can be, and I don’t think we should have to wait for any more accidents before we take action.
“If you live in or around the area, please sign our petition, and share it with your friends and family too, so we can send a clear message to Wandsworth Council and TfL, that inaction is not an option.”
Since its launch this morning the petition has gathered more than 100 signatures from concerned residents keen to have the road improved.
Councillor Fleur Anderson said: “Lots of people are really concerned about how dangerous Balham High Road is. I’ve seen three accidents of cars hitting motorbikes in the last year and there have been several more.’
“The amount of support this petition has received already demonstrates the level of support for the Council and Transport for London to take safety on Balham High Road seriously. It’s an accident black spot and we want action urgently.”
The thoughts of the community remain with the latest victims of the treacherous stretch of road.
Mum Jane Briginshaw who lives in the area said: “My thoughts are with the two people involved in the crash and I wish them a speedy recovery. As a local resident, and a parent, I can only hope the accident will be a spur for action to make Balham High Road safe for everyone.
“Please help us turn this road into the place it could and should be – a place to enjoy life rather than a hostile traffic corridor. Please join me and other local parents in backing this petition.”
