Mercedes drivers are London’s worst, new data shows

Mercedes drivers are the capital’s worst after racking up more speeding tickets than any other car brand in London, new data from the Metropolitan Police shows.

Motorists behind the wheel of the luxury German motors were punished for a whopping 107,922 speeding offences between January 2025 and March 2026.

The figure means Merc drivers accounted for around one in eight of the 900,000-plus speeding tickets recorded in London over the same period.

Ford owners came second with 84,764 offences, while BMW drivers were close behind on 82,455.

Iqbal, from Blackwall, owns a Mercedes E-Class AMG, but insists he has never picked up a speeding ticket.

He said: “It’s a nice car to put your foot down in, but I’ve never had a ticket in the Mercedes.

“It’s usually BMW drivers flying about. They get a bit too ahead of themselves.”

There are likely around 180,000 to 205,000 Mercedes cars and vans registered in London, compared with roughly 300,000 to 345,000 Fords.

Separate Transport for London figures, from a freedom of information request, show Mercedes drivers were hit with thousands of road-charging penalties.

Motorists driving Mercs were issued 17,786 bus lane fines, 114,295 congestion charge penalties and 215,425 ULEZ penalties.

Using the minimum TfL penalty levels, the offences were valued at more than £30million.

That includes at least £19.4million in ULEZ fines, £10.3million in congestion charge penalties, plus more than £1.4million for bus-lane offences.

Ford drivers were stung with the highest number of ULEZ penalties overall, clocking up 329,458 notices.

The emission-reducing scheme has sparked fury among some motorists who claim it unfairly targets drivers unable to afford newer cars.

ULEZ cameras have repeatedly been vandalised across London since the scheme expanded.

And the fines may not be the only hit to motorists’ wallets.

Insurers say speeding convictions can push up premiums by as much as 25%, with BMW and Mercedes drivers already among the priciest road users to insure in Britain.

BMW operators still managed to rack up more than 82,000 speeding offences across the capital.
