Grills in a back garden

Brixton home restaurant leads the charge against child hunger

A Brixton restaurant operating out of the owner’s home has been doing its bit in the fight against the cost of living and child hunger.

Maureen’s Kitchen is a unique eatery just off Coldharbour Lane, down Railton Road, where they combine the experiences of good Jamaican cuisine with a literal homely feel.

Maureen Tyne, who runs the restaurant, has started to get recognition in the Brixton community not only for her cooking, but also for her charity.

Tyne, who receives no government help, gives as many as 100 meals a day to underprivileged children within the Brixton community struggling with the cost of living.

Maureen said: “The community supports me. As a person I won’t turn my back on anyone.”

Maureen’s Kitchen quite literally operates out of Maureen’s kitchen

Brixton resident, Ciaran Lamptey, 23, who visits the homey takeaway, said: “Yes I heard she does that kind of stuff. It’s cool to hear local businesses supporting underprivileged kids like that.”

Maureen has come from humble beginnings herself, detailing how following the birth of her first born she needed to quit her job at Sainsbury’s to raise him.

She explained a wholesome but also comedic story where she invited one of her friends over for dinner and while she was telling them about her potentially incoming hardship, her friend replied:

“You cook so nice, so why don’t you cook and sell?”

This proposition started the garden grills which have been a feature of Railton Road for the last 20 years, selling quintessentially Jamaican food that have begun to dominate the Brixton shop fronts.

Maureen was able to care for her first child while also providing an income and she gave credit to the community support she received.

But with the unique nature of being delivered straight from Maureen’s kitchen back doors, it has successfully set itself apart from the competition.

The Brixton yard was also nominated for the End Hunger Awards, an initiative by the advocacy team that recognises and supports individuals and organisations working to end food insecurity.

If anyone loves Caribbean food with a charitable twist, then this Lambeth home will be a suitable alternative from everyday fast food chains.
