Richmond pub reopens after six-figure Greene King investment

One of the oldest pubs in Richmond has reopened after a six-figure investment and refurbishment by pub company Greene King.

The Roebuck, which has graced Richmond Hill for more than 300 years, marked the occasion on Wednesday 20 March with an official launch event hosted by British pub historian and writer Pete Brown.

More than 120 local residents attended the event, where they sampled a selection of the brand new menus, got a tour of the refurbished pub and were treated to a talk on the pub’s celebrated history by Brown.

Alex Dawson, Business Unit Director for Greene King, said: “With a vista that has been celebrated by some of the world’s greatest artists, it was key that the Roebuck’s unique heritage continues to have a special place in the history of Richmond.

“We’re proud that this investment has enabled the Roebuck to become as splendid as its view, offering a warm and welcome space that celebrates a piece of history that can be enjoyed by generations to come.”

With its outstanding views over royal parkland and the Thames, and a name dating back to 1717, the team were keen to get historian Brown on board in the design process to give the pub a well-needed refresh while paying homage to its unique history.

The pub has been restored with an extensive artwork collection, vintage furniture and original open fireplaces, as well as an extended first floor dining area complete with a floor to ceiling parkland mural.

The new update even features a new space for intimate dining experiences entitled ‘The Turner Room’ honouring the pubs historical links to painter JMW Turner.

Alongside the refreshed interiors with cosy drinking nooks and an extended bar on the ground floor, the Roebuck has also relaunched a brand-new food and drinks menu.

Fifteen new wines have been added to the pub’s selection and the Roebuck now serves a range of signature cocktails, craft beers and even its very own Roebuck Pale Ale with flavours of tropical fruit and mango.

Guests can also tuck into the best of feel-good pub classics, with hearty roasts, comforting British cheese toasties and homemade Welsh rarebit sausage rolls all featuring on the new menu.

A range of barista-made coffees and soft drinks are also available, with all drinks being served from 11am daily, when the pub opens.
