Croydon-based website crowdfunds legal fees ahead of libel case

A Croydon-based independent news website has successfully crowdfunded its legal fees for a defence against a libel suit by Boxpark.

Half of the money required was raised within the first hour of the campaign, set up on May 3, dubbed the Boxpark Balls Fund.

The rest of the £1,600 target was met in another 25 hours, with 77 backers.

InsideCroydon editor and founder Steven Downes said he was delighted and humbled by the reaction to his appeal for help.

Boxpark are described on their website as a pop-up mall. Their lawyers, Metis Law, described some of the information in an article about Boxpark published on Inside Croydon as ‘baseless, false, and unquestionably defamatory’.

They further accused InsideCroydon of running two Twitter accounts publishing defamatory statements against Boxpark Croydon. The alleged statements cannot be repeated for legal reasons.

All allegations are refuted by InsideCroydon’s lawyers, Gordon Dadds.

Boxpark did not wish to comment on the case.
