The Fazal Mosque celebrated its 100th anniversary in Southfields, marking a century since London’s first purpose-built mosque opened.
Located in Southfields, the Fazal Mosque marked this special occasion on 3 October, exactly a century after its inauguration.
Historically, the mosque was a place of sanctuary for families during the Blitz in the Second World War, with some continuing to come to the mosque years after to gain solace and peace.
When talking about her first visit to this mosque, 25 years ago, Shumaila Nagi, 66, said: “It captures your heart, it captures your mind, and you feel instantly at home.
“And that’s such a warm, lovely feeling that I never forget.”

Funds for the mosque’s construction came mainly from ladies in Qadian, India, many of whom did not get to see the mosque.
The Fazal Mosque 100th anniversary celebrations included a street party attended by more than 500 people, with the area decorated with bunting and British flags.
Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London, Colleen Harris, 70, said: “I am a Wandsworth girl, born and bred, and I’m ashamed to say I’ve never been here before and I feel I’ve missed out on so much.
“It’s such an interesting and beautiful and moving place.”
